Sandwich Gaskets
The Boeing Co. has developed a new "sandwich" gasket for aircraft that prevents corrosion and eliminates the need for sealants and toxic materials. The Boeing-patented gasket is licensed to and manufactured by TA Mfg. Co. of Valencia, CA. The gasket, which can be used to install antennas and similar equipment, consists of a double aluminum mesh with a fluorosilicone compound placed between the two screens. When pressure is applied, a waterproof seal is formed, thus replacing the traditional process of applying a polysulfide compound for sealing. Using current methods of installation, it often takes up to four hours to remove and replace an antenna. With the sandwich gasket, the change can be accomplished in a half hour.
